What is Forest bathing?

Are you feeling stressed, worn out or empty?

Perhaps it's time to reconnect with the healing power of nature through forest bathing!

Originating in Japan in the 1980s as a response to increasing work-related stress, Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, offers a holistic approach to relaxation and rejuvenation. It's about more than just taking a walk in the woods—it's a deliberate immersion in the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest, allowing your senses to bathe in its calming embrace.

Scientific research has shown that spending time in nature can have profound effects on both mental and physical well-being. From reducing stress levels and boosting mood to strengthening the immune system, the benefits of forest bathing are as diverse as the ecosystems it inhabits.

But beyond its therapeutic effects, forest bathing is also a profound spiritual experience—an opportunity to reconnect with our primal roots and rediscover our place in the natural world. It's a gentle reminder that we are not separate from nature, but intricately woven into its intricate web of life.

In forest bathing, we engage in a deliberate practice of slow movement, utilizing our senses to fully immerse ourselves in the natural environment. Through the act of smelling, seeing, tasting, feeling, and hearing our surroundings, we awaken our awareness and deepen our connection to nature and ourselves.

Each forest bathing session offers a tailored sequence of invitations designed to cultivate presence and foster a deeper communion with the natural world. These invitations are personalized by experienced guides, adapted to the unique needs of participants, as well as the specific characteristics of the surrounding nature and weather conditions.

The forest bathing experience culminates in a tea ceremony  providing a moment of reflection and gratitude for the journey embarked upon.

Typically lasting between 2 to 3 hours, a forest bathing session offers time to fully immerse oneself in the restorative power of the forest.

In forest bathing you are invited find what you need at your own pace. Each experience is personal and unique and no one is more right than another.

We alternate between discovering ourselves in silence and sharing experiences with one another.

Forest baths can be adapted to all ages and physical conditions.

What do I need?

As forest bathing involves immersing our minds and senses in nature rather than our bodies, there's no need for bathing suits. Instead, it's advisable to dress comfortably, layer up for warmth, wear comfortable shoes, and bring along a seat pad for added comfort during moments of rest and reflection. It's also a good idea to bring along some water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the experience.

Hello, I'm Helena Johard, a certified Shinrin-Yoku guide accredited by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy.

and also a mushroom consultant. My guiding services are primarily available on Lidingö and in Hälsingland, Sweden. In addition to guiding, I am a practicing fine artist with a background in stem cell research and neurobiology.

Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by what life is and how we perceive reality. Nature with all the life-forms that surrounds us is an endless secret space to experience where new stories are interwoven. It reminds me of the joyful feeling I experienced as a child of a spirited nature and the forest as a fabulous adventure where time is endless and all emotions have a place.
